Keeping It in the Family Bartlett Palmer

Bartlett Palmer is the son of the famed father of chiropractics, Daniel Palmer. Very little is recorded about his formative years, with the exception of the fact that his mother died when he was merely four years old. Unable to cope with her death, his father engaged in a number of relationships with women and also married a number of them. At the same time, he began to further intensify his research into spiritualism and magnetic healing. In the course of time, he also worked with the alignment of the spine in an effort to heal others, and as such his first major successful breakthrough occurred in 1895, when Bartlett was 14 years old, and the elder Mr. Palmer was able to cure a man of deafness simply by manipulating his spine.

Heavily influenced by what he witnessed, young Bartlett would soon follow in his fathers footsteps and also attended the Palmer School of Chiropractic which his father had founded in 1897. At the young age of 21 he took over the running of the school from his father who was found guilty of practicing medicine without a license. What sets him apart from his fathers area of practice and expertise is that instead of pressing onward and fighting the system, he would use it to flourish and grow the new discovery. Refining the training process, he became known as a renowned teacher of chiropractic, which at times had him at odds with his father.

Later on, Bartlett would venture out into business and in addition to being a chiropractor of standing in society; he also invested wisely and purchased a radio station and later on a television station. Being a bit of an eccentric, he would go on to openly showcase his wealth by being one of the first ones in his neighborhood to get around by automobile, while also becoming something of a celebrity because of his collection that featured memorabilia connected to the late President Abraham Lincoln. In 1961 Bartlett died, and in a very real way a piece of medical history died with him.

His legacy still stands, however; his radio station, named WOC for wonders of chiropractic, was once fabulous for letting the residents know about the miracles that chiropractic care could have in store for them. Today it is owned by Clear Channel Communications which is well known for owning a large number of stations across the United States. Very few listeners know what the call letters stand for, and every so often this little piece of history is commented upon in the local Davenport newspapers.

Another part of the legacy that lives on is the education that Bartlett Palmer gave to countless chiropractors in training. Many have gone on to become teachers themselves. Even those who went into private practice have taken the knowledge of both the elder and also the younger Palmer, and shown the world that alternative medical practices are not only here to stay, but can boast of a good many success stories!

Becoming a Licensed Chiropractor in the United States

When chiropractics first began with Daniel Palmer, there were no schools, no course of study, and not much research that would enable others to come to similar conclusions. Fortunately, when Mr. Palmer realizes that he was on the cutting edge of alternative medical healing, he and his son Bartlett after him, chose to go ahead and found a school that would permit interested individuals to take up a course of study that would enable them to not only understand the reasoning behind chiropractic care, but to also turn around and practice this new art themselves with the tools discovered by Mr. Palmer. Granted, he came under close scrutiny for practicing medicine without a license, but when the medical establishment sought to stop the practice of chiropractic care altogether, it soon became obvious that it would be impossible to put the genie back into the bottle. The unease between conventional medicine and alternative healing continued with occasional flare ups until the United States government in coordination with the governing bodies of the chiropractic movement laid down the guidelines that would permit a chiropractor to hang out a shingle and open a practice.

Becoming a licensed chiropractor in the United States is an achievable goal if you are not afraid of some hard work. You will need to successfully finish a Doctor of Chiropractics degree program at an accredited university or college where you will receive the kind of education that entitles you to the degree by both the United States government and also the Council on Chiropractic Education. Generally speaking, the latter offers a number of guidelines that must be met in order to permit a student to sit for the various exams that will entitle her or him to finally round out the course of study with an internship. When you are shopping around for a school to attend for your courses of study, make certain that its curriculum meets or exceeds the guidelines of the Council on Chiropractic Education and that it is accredited by the United States. There are currently no home study courses available to earn this degree.

Successful graduation from an accredited school with reward you with a degree naming you a Doctor of Chiropractics and you will now be eligible to receive a license in every state including Puerto Rico and also Canada. Many foreign countries will also accept the American degree and allow you to apply for licensing. To receive a license to practice, you will need to successfully finish a number of examples, namely the physiotherapy exam consisting of parts one, two, and three as well as the practical exam part four. Obviously, these guidelines may change and be updated from time to time, and individual states may also choose additional tests which are to be administered to receive a license to practice chiropractics within the state border. In addition to the foregoing, a licensed and practicing chiropractor will usually have to keep up with a minimum amount of continuing education on a yearly basis to ensure that the license will remain in effect.

Finding A Chiropractor for Rover What to Avoid

Dogs, just like their owners, can suffer from subluxation. It is therefore not surprising that quite a few specialists have begun to advertise their services as bona fide animal chiropractors. While this is a positive development after all, it is great that chiropractic care for animals is now available there is also room for error, and some who hold themselves out to be animal chiropractors really are not. Sure, they may have a rudimentary understanding of veterinary science, but they do not know the fine points of an animals anatomy. On the flipside, they may be well versed in human chiropractics, but know little of animal chiropractics. Here are some signs that you have found a practitioner you should avoid:
* The professional you are visiting is not specifically trained in animal chiropractics. This may be either a veterinarian who is dabbling in chiropractics or a human chiropractor who wants to expand her or his clientele. There are bona fide courses of study for those who would engage in this profession, and successful completion is rewarded with a certificate.
* The professional you are visiting does not have any veterinary background. This is oftentimes found in chiropractors who are seeking to train themselves to become animal care providers, but they are lacking the in depth knowledge in the methodology as well as the facts needed to adequate diagnose problems.
* If you find someone who is both trained and also certificated, take a look at their methods. If the professional proceeds to pull the dogs legs or even the tail, it is a good indicator that she or he is lacking hands on training or expertise, and it is probably best to move on. Avoid those who are good with horses but have never treated a dog before. The same is true the other way round as well. Many animal chiropractors are general practitioners, but some specialize and it is hard to infer knowledge from one species to another.
* If the veterinary chiropractor is content to take your word for the ailment and fails to examine the dog prior to engaging in vertebrae adjustments, it is best to move on. While you know your dog best, a veterinary chiropractor needs to examine the animal to ensure that there are no underlying causes for the change in gait such as a cracked or broken bone which could be aggravated by any attempts of manipulation or adjustment.

Speak to your trusted veterinarian to recommend a practitioner. Perhaps friends or family members know of a veterinary chiropractor who is great with certain types of animals, and you can go ahead and make an appointment. Similarly, if you do not know anyone who can make a recommendation, go ahead and contact local dog breeders for suggestions and advise. Last but not least, contact the licensing agencies which certificate animal chiropractors to give you names and phone numbers for practitioners in your area. You will find that finding the right chiropractor for Rover is just as important as finding the right practitioner for you!

The First Chiropractic Success Story The Healing of Harvey Lillard

Precious little is known about the man who would make history as the first chiropractic success story, Mr. Harvey Lillard. All the information that is recorded for posterity comes down from his benefactor and healer, Daniel Palmer, the father of chiropractic medicine. It is said that Mr. Lillard worked as a janitor in the general vicinity where Mr. Palmer kept his office. As a manual laborer during the time of the industrial revolution, it is easy to extrapolate that he engaged in hard work that often took place in less than safe and favorable work environments.

According to Mr. Palmer, Mr. Lillard became suddenly deaf when he was working in a small space that demanded an awkward tilt of the back and shoulders. According to the janitors recollections, there was a feeling of shifting in his back as well as a pop, and immediately the mans hearing diminished to the point of deafness. For 17 years Mr. Lillard remained in this state and was unable to receive any relief or cure for his ailment.

It fascinated Mr. Palmer to hear the story about the aggravation of the spine and he assumed that a vertebra had slipped and perhaps pinched a nerve or decimated the blood flow to areas vital to hearing. With Mr. Lillards consent, in 1895 Mr. Palmer sought to undo what had happened 17 years prior, and figured that if the vertebra was put back into place, then the nerves that were pinched or the blood flow that was diminished would be restored to normal and hearing would return. Upon realigning the spine, Mr. Lillards hearing returned.

It is uncertain whether Mr. Lillards hearing returned after one visit to Mr. Palmers office, or if it took several. Similarly, it is not quite clear if the hearing returned suddenly and all at once just as it appeared to have been lost simultaneously with the displacement of the vertebra during the hard labor performed of if it was a gradual process that took place with increasing measure when the nerves were freed from the vertebra that had a stranglehold on them. Yet the end result is clearly undisputed.

Of course, there are detractors to this story, some of whom are actually quite close to the patient himself. Yet in spite of all those who would make fun of chiropractics, none were quite able to disprove the fact that once Mr. Lillard was deaf, but after being treated with the means of chiropractic manipulation of the spine, his hearing returned. In modern circles today there is some speculation that this story might perhaps be a myth or made up story that is an amalgam of many different healings in which Mr. Palmer had a hand, but thus far, it appears that this theory is incorrect.

As an aside, there have been studies by those who sought to duplicate Mr. Palmers success with the hearing impaired man, and it was found that there are actually studies of patients whose hearing improved upon having their spines manipulated!

Chiropractic Care for Mans Best Friend

Not only humans can benefit from the treatment options available from chiropractor, but animals will be able to benefit as well. At this point in time, horses and dogs are common treated by specially trained veterinarians who have also undergone a course of study in animal chiropractics. It is important to understand that treating an animal and treating a human with chiropractics are two entirely different approaches; thus, even the most gifted chiropractor with a human clientele will require additional training before beginning to treat animals. Another caveat to consider is the fact that for many humans chiropractic care is an alternative to established medicine, and many favor the use of holistic medicine as a whole. Yet for animals, veterinary care is a requirement that should not be negated in favor of chiropractic care. Instead, good chiropractic care can make a wonderful addition to the arsenal of tools available to your veterinarian!

Pet any dog and you will feel its spine underneath the fur. Watch your dog run and jump, and you can see some of the amazing twists and turns the pooch will make when chasing a Frisbee, stick, or simply a fly. Yet have you ever wondered if the animals spine could get out of whack just like your own? If so, the short answer is yes and this is where the veterinary chiropractor comes in. If your dog suddenly walks oddly, it is probably because its body is trying to move in such a way as to avoid pain. Unlike humans, animals do not complain and they cannot pop pain pills, so they seek to move in such as way as to avoid the painful spasms of a torn muscle, ligament, or sprained joint. If you find that your dog is simply not moving the way it should, there might be an underlying reason. Here are some more symptoms that could indicate a spine that is out of alignment and needs help:
* Your dog walks with its tail tucked between its hind legs.
* As your dog is sitting or standing, its posture is different from usual.
* Your dog suddenly sits down gingerly rather than simply plopping down next to you.
* Your dogs gait suddenly appears different; there are indicators of stiffness; the animal might be hopping at times rather than walking normally.
* Perhaps the most telling of all signs is a lameness that is not confined to one extremity but instead seems to be affecting different limbs at different times.

If you find that your dog is suffering thusly, you should alert your veterinary specialist who ideally should also be trained in animal chiropractics and who will work with your dogs spine to bring it back into alignment. While there are no special gadgets available to hold your dog while the vet works on it, the animal will usually be standing under restraint while the spine is manipulated in such a manner as to coax the misaligned vertebra back into its spot. Soon, your animal will be its old self again.

Understanding Subluxation

In chiropractic terminology, subluxation sometimes also termed vertebral subluxation simply refers to a condition which points to any number of complaints that are thought to be traced back to a vertebra that is not properly aligned with the rest of the spine. After all, the spine itself is but a number of vertebrae that are loosely connected to permit a human being to bend, twist, and move. In the course of any such movements it is entirely possible to knock a vertebra out of alignment. In some cases this misalignment may be severe and result in excruciating pain, while in other cases the alignment may just be very slightly affected, and pain may be only experienced when the misaligned vertebra is moved in a certain direction. In extreme cases, the sudden change of position of a vertebra may cause nerves to be trapped within the confines of the moving portions of the vertebra, thus pinching them or otherwise inhibiting the information that is passed along these sensitive strands. This may lead to a host of ailments, none of which can be directly traced back to the misaligned vertebra.

While the field of chiropractics undoubtedly borrowed this term from the orthopedic field of medicine, it is important to point out that it does not refer to the same kind of conditions as would be diagnosed and treated at an orthopedic office. As a matter of fact, while it is a long standing reality that established medicine has eyed chiropractics with something akin to distrust and at times sneered at its claims, the idea of shared terminology is definitely not sitting well with a great many physicians. Thus, it does not surprise at all when physicians time and again warn against the use of medical terminology in a way that is not entirely sanctioned by the American Medical Associations. Granted, there is room for error if there were a lot of file sharing but considering the fact that when chiropractors speak of subluxation, it is a foregone conclusion that they are referring to the misalignment of the spine and any symptoms that may present, it is rare that any errors because of interdisciplinary terminology might occur.

It is interesting to note that even within the field of chiropractics there is not a clear cut definition of the term or even adherence to the terminology. Some practitioners tend to side with the medical community and seek to circumvent the use of the term subluxation altogether, while others use it within the frame work that defines it from its earliest days. Yet no matter which side of the issue you might land on, the truth of the matter simply states that any kind of vertebral subluxation is a trigger for a host of ailments, problems and complaints which might be harnessed with the proper intervention which is, after all, what chiropractics is all about. In conjunction with medical imaging, a chiropractor will be able to determine the site subluxation, the extent of it, and to some degree also the related problems arising form the misaligned vertebrae. In the same way, she or he will also be able to determine if a mode of treatment is successful or not.

A Chiropractic School in Great Britain McTimoney College of Chiropractics

Great Britain may not be a hotbed for chiropractics, but once the science invaded the isle, it was next to impossible to pretend it was not popular. As a matter of fact, many Brits view the chiropractor with something akin to awe, in part because she or he is so in tune with the bodys functioning and in another part because it is possible for a chiropractor to affect so much of a persons life and quality of life simply by expertly placing hands on certain areas of the vertebrae and adjusting them. It is therefore not surprising that a number of schools have sprung up that are supporting those who are embarking on a career in chiropractics, and if you are thinking of studying in Great Britain to become a chiropractor, you will want to know about them as well!

Take for example McTimoney College of Chiropractic science and art in Oxfordshire. In 1972 this college was founded by the late John McTimoney whose professional life before the Great Depression began as a silversmith. Along the way he changed course and became an artist, yet it was his lifelong love for others in pain and attempts to find ways that would ease pain that would lead to the spectacular change in life which would have far reaching consequences. Mr. McTimoney himself suffered a fall from a ladder which gradually robbed him of the use of his arms and began to impair the use of his legs as well. Physicians suggested a risky surgery, yet Mrs. McTimoney had revived an early childhood acquaintance with a chiropractor who had studied with Daniel Palmer, the inventor of chiropractics, himself. This chiropractor treated Mr. McTimoney successfully and the latter was so impressed with the ability to relieve pain that he was hoping to find a way to learn this art. It would take a few more years until Mr. McTimoney once again crossed paths with a chiropractor, a student of Bartlett Palmer, who was actively searching out students for her craft, and this time he went ahead and trained.

Given time, Mr. McTimoney was able to cure his own wife from neuritis and in 1951 went into private practice as a chiropractor. While in practice, he fine-tuned his approach to the practice and soon became known as a holistic healer. Three years later he began to use his ability also to ease pain in animals, and to this day he is credited with being the first chiropractor ever to attempt such a feat. Due to the overwhelming demand for his services, in 1972 he founded the Oxfordshire School of Chiropractic where he taught others to not only relive the suffering of humans but also of animals. In the year 1980 John McTimoney died, but his school and mission endures to this day, being perpetuated by the mans former students who now pass on his knowledge, understanding and innovation to anyone who feels the calling to spend a life dedicated to easing suffering in man and beast.

Interested In A Course Of Study In Chiropractics? Here Is what You Will Learn!

If you are interested in a course of study that will after four long years and a host of examinations later give you the right and privilege to call yourself a doctor of chiropractics, you will most likely want to know exactly what it is that you are getting yourself into. You probably already know that chiropractics are a science as well as an art and as such it is concerned not only with the nervous system, the musculature, or the skeleton, but instead it sees all of these aspects as part of a whole, and as such they are affecting one another.

When you apply for admission to a chiropractic college or university, you are also applying to become part of an education process that prepares you to become a primary health care provider. As such you will learn to treat patients of any age whether infant, tot, or baby boomer as well as either gender. It is imperative that you understand the way a female body works just as you will need to understand the workings of the male physiology. Secondly, you will need to learn how to listen to patient complaints without having your mind clouded with medical terminology. The patient who will come to you for healing will explain his or her problems in words that are more closely related to everyday language, and as such you will need to be able to truly listen and understand what is being said, since it will tip you off to possible relationships in the complaints. Additionally, your years at chiropractic school will teach you how to assess a patients ailments. It will help you to learn which questions to ask, how to weigh the answers, and how to detect the relationships that exist between them.

Add to this the fact that you will need to learn how to spot a patient who will only benefit from your treatment tangentially and who will also need to receive the services of an internist, and you can easily ascertain that it is not as easy to begin treating patients as simply learning a few new skills. Perhaps the most important aspect of your learning process is the analytical mind that will be honed. You will learn how to collect data, assess current and past health, review treatment options, and analyze possibilities for success and also further testing. You will become familiar with a whole host of available tests that do not in any way oppose your alternative health point of view but instead will work hand in hand with it to give your patients the best possible outcome. This will require that you learn to not only operate for the short term but much more so focus on the long term outlook your patient will be facing. It is rather likely that this is one of the most important aspects of the chiropractic care you will learn when you embark on a course of study in chiropractics. There are many schools now available in the United States that are working hard to provide just this kind of insight to their students, and if you are ready to take on a challenge, you can be one of them!
