Minimizing Back Pain Your Chiropractor Can Help

Who has not woken up one morning only to feel so much back pain that it was next to impossible to get out of bed? For some, this is a daily occurrence and as such almost goes by unnoticed, just like the pain pills that are being swallowed for breakfast. Fortunately, your chiropractor can help you to not only get over your back pain, but to also to adjust your daily life so that you will be able to eliminate a large number of triggers that cause back pain in the first place.

Generally speaking, every activity has the potential to contribute to your aching back. It does not matter if you are walking, standing, sitting, or lying down if your posture is not as good as it should be, even sleeping can be a trigger for back aches. Of course, there are some things you can do to avoid back pain altogether, or to at least minimize its occurrence. Your chiropractor will be able to help you with suggestions specifically tailored to your life style, but here are some tips that apply to almost everyone:
* If you feel a sharp pain in your back or simply a dull ache, write down exactly what happened when you first felt it. If it occurs frequently throughout the day, write down the times that it seems to present most of all to find out if there is a correlation between an activity and the onset of pain.
* Make an appointment with a chiropractor for a thorough exam and subsequent treatment as needed.
* Check your weight. It is no secret that overweight persons will suffer more often from back pain than those with a normal weight. After all, the bones have to do more work to carry all the weight, and if you are not overweight, this is a factor that will not present itself in your life.
* Wear shoes that make sense. Footwear is a sore spot for many a chiropractor, and whenever a woman comes to treatment in high heels, or anyone presents themselves with shoes that are so worn down that they make a healthy gait next to impossible, a chiropractor will point out that until the patient will invest in proper and healthy footwear, there will always be an increased risk of back pain.
* Lifting is an important subject for many chiropractors as well. When treating those who in the course of their work lift heavy loads or even lighter loads but on a continuous basis, chiropractors advise to lift properly with the knees and not the lower back.

Of course, if you already suffer from pack pain, your chiropractor will be able to help you. Treating you as a whole person not just your back your chiropractor will adjust your spine, give you tips on proper nutrition and also help you to make good choices with respect to exercise. As you can see, back pain is not something that needs to be endured but instead with the proper professional help, you will be able to make it a piece of your history without popping so much as one pill!

Are You In Pain and Stumped Find Out What A Doctor Of Chiropractic Can Do For You!

Whenever you speak of chiropractors, you will often hear the adherents of old school medical treatments deride their work as being unlicensed and a quacks profession. Yet speak to someone who really understands the science behind the art of chiropractics and also the hard work and long hours that go into learning this technique, and you will be amazed to find out just how intricate the study process really is, and what amount of knowledge a professional chiropractor truly possesses. Of course, some ascribe way too much ability to these professionals as well, and many a chiropractor will be quick to point out to you that working in concert with other medical professionals will bring about great results, while relying on only one aspect of medicine will severely limit the outcome.

A chiropractor just like any other health professional will listen intently to the complaints of the patient and will seek to build a picture of the individuals health, past as well as present. Yet unlike a medical professional who will order a series of blood tests to determine if there are any abnormalities in the white cell count that could hint toward infection or perhaps any other problems such as hormonal imbalances, the chiropractor will seek to ascertain if there dysfunctions of the soft tissues, the skeleton, or perhaps any nerves running along the spinal area. Once a diagnosis is arrived at, the chiropractor will not put you on a drug regimen or give you a number of injections. In addition to the foregoing, your chiropractor will most likely not encourage you to change your environment to such an extent as to not aggravate your condition any further. On the contrary, she or he will work hard to help your body to once again regain its former abilities obviously within the limitations of you current age and overall state of health.

Treatment will generally involve gentle and sometimes stronger manipulations of the spine. What is colloquially referred to as bone cracking is really a much more refined technique of realigning vertebrae that are no longer properly stacked. The goal of this kind of treatment is taking the musculoskeletal system back to the shape in which it is supposed to be, and then allowing nerves and tissues to follow along and once again retake their natural position. For those who have lived with a disjointed spine for a while, this may take a few visits, especially if the tissues and tendons have worked hard to compensate for the misaligned vertebrae for a long period of time.

It is true that sometimes these adjustments are painful. This is not always the case, of course, but when a body has to relearn a proper gait, a way to throw a ball or simply the act of setting one foot in front of the other, the learning curve may be prolonged and at times rather uncomfortable. Yet these moments pale when compared to the many instances where pain is reduced simply because the body is retrained to function normally.

Keeping It in the Family Bartlett Palmer

Bartlett Palmer is the son of the famed father of chiropractics, Daniel Palmer. Very little is recorded about his formative years, with the exception of the fact that his mother died when he was merely four years old. Unable to cope with her death, his father engaged in a number of relationships with women and also married a number of them. At the same time, he began to further intensify his research into spiritualism and magnetic healing. In the course of time, he also worked with the alignment of the spine in an effort to heal others, and as such his first major successful breakthrough occurred in 1895, when Bartlett was 14 years old, and the elder Mr. Palmer was able to cure a man of deafness simply by manipulating his spine.

Heavily influenced by what he witnessed, young Bartlett would soon follow in his fathers footsteps and also attended the Palmer School of Chiropractic which his father had founded in 1897. At the young age of 21 he took over the running of the school from his father who was found guilty of practicing medicine without a license. What sets him apart from his fathers area of practice and expertise is that instead of pressing onward and fighting the system, he would use it to flourish and grow the new discovery. Refining the training process, he became known as a renowned teacher of chiropractic, which at times had him at odds with his father.

Later on, Bartlett would venture out into business and in addition to being a chiropractor of standing in society; he also invested wisely and purchased a radio station and later on a television station. Being a bit of an eccentric, he would go on to openly showcase his wealth by being one of the first ones in his neighborhood to get around by automobile, while also becoming something of a celebrity because of his collection that featured memorabilia connected to the late President Abraham Lincoln. In 1961 Bartlett died, and in a very real way a piece of medical history died with him.

His legacy still stands, however; his radio station, named WOC for wonders of chiropractic, was once fabulous for letting the residents know about the miracles that chiropractic care could have in store for them. Today it is owned by Clear Channel Communications which is well known for owning a large number of stations across the United States. Very few listeners know what the call letters stand for, and every so often this little piece of history is commented upon in the local Davenport newspapers.

Another part of the legacy that lives on is the education that Bartlett Palmer gave to countless chiropractors in training. Many have gone on to become teachers themselves. Even those who went into private practice have taken the knowledge of both the elder and also the younger Palmer, and shown the world that alternative medical practices are not only here to stay, but can boast of a good many success stories!

Who Studies Chiropractics?

Considering the fact that it takes a fair amount of time before an aspiring chiropractor will be able to hang out a shingle, rent some office space, and go into business, it makes one wonder just who would take on such a challenge. After all, considering the fact that most often it is required of students to hold a baccalaureate degree and then add four years of full time study to it, it would make sense for them to go into what is considered mainstream medicine. Yet instead of doing so, those who perceive the call for chiropractics find that they might have a different mission in life; as a matter of fact, rather than simply viewing modern medicine as the panacea for all that ails people, chiropractors see themselves as members of a healing art, not a healing science.

To this end they focus on the patient as a whole, not simply on a limb or physiological system that appears to be adversely affected. Thus, aspiring chiropractors enjoy the study of other aspects of medicine such as geriatrics and neurology since they believe that all things that make up a patient as a human being will also factor into healing this individual. Chiropractic colleges therefore offer comprehensive curricula to their students which stress the relationship that exists between the way that the human body will function on a day to day basis and the structure of the body that helps it to function. In other words, a chiropractor is familiar with the skeleton as well as the nerves and the muscles and the way each element supports another, or, on the other hand, how they may detract functionality from one another. As such, chiropractic students time and again receive training that emphasizes the relationship and seeks out new avenues for students to help suffering patients.

Since chiropractics are becoming more and more a mainstream medical occupation, there are now a number of insurance companies who accept chiropractors as primary care physicians. As such, it falls to the chiropractor to ascertain when a patient will need to see an internist, or when simple chiropractic manipulation will not be enough to heal. It is thus not surprising that this put many of the old school chiropractors at odds with the established medical disciplines, simply because the animosity has existed for so long between the healing arts and healing sciences. Those who now undergo a course of study in chiropractics understand that both sides of the medical isle must work together and to do so takes not only an understanding of the healing sciences but also knowledge of the limitations that may be found within chiropractics. Thus, in many ways the students who are learning about their craft do not only pursue the course of study to successfully heal patients, but also to understand at which point in time they will need to work together with other health care professionals to truly afford their patients the healing they need as well as the healing that they can give them.

Painting Your House with Your Chiropractor

Who would have thought that your chiropractor has helpful advice for painting enthusiasts? Painting your house with your chiropractor does not imply that she or he will visit you next Saturday with a paintbrush in hand and ready to do some work. Instead, it simply underlines the fact that springtime brings the notion of spring cleaning, makes the flaking paint around your shutters stand out, and seems to increase the amount of bother that the peeling paint on your living room ceiling causes you. Suddenly you notice the ill-done paintjobs of years past, and you vow to make things right this spring. Chiropractors know about spring fever, but they warn that this is also the prime season to injure yourself with the most innocent activities, especially if you are not prepared physically to undertake activities and chores that your body is not accustomed to and conditioned to do.

There is more to painting even a square room than just the up and down motion of the brush and the gradual movement down the room. There is the twisting to reach that far off spot that is just a bit higher than the ladder will reach, the bending to get the paintbrush into the crevices between the floor and the and the corner, the reaching for the overhead painting, and a host of other activities that spell trouble in the world of a chiropractor. To this end, many chiropractors counsel their patients that when spring has sprung and the honey do lists are getting longer than your arm, it is wise to approach them with care and to prevent the pain that hobby painters experience in their muscles of the back and shoulders, and even the upper legs. You might remember the morning after a painting project in the past when waking up was almost synonymous with pain in areas of your body you did not even know had muscle groups!

Painting your house with your chiropractors advice means following a lot of lifestyle counseling tips she or he has to give you. For example, your chiropractor wants you to know that stretching and warm up exercises are part and parcel of having a freshly painted house. You will help to prevent injuries, joint pain, and also the next mornings muscle stiffness that you are bound to experience otherwise. As you are painting, keep a healthy posture, even when it is hard to do. After prolonged periods of time spent bent or stretched, do some light loosening up exercises to keep your muscles limber and to prevent any pain the next morning. After you project is completed and the clean up is done, do some cool down exercises to help your muscles slow down and work off some of the substances that have been building all day in them. This will help you to not wake up the next morning virtually unable to get out of bed. While these exercises do not guarantee a pain free painting experience, they will greatly reduce the stress that your body will suffer. For the more persistent ailments be sure to make an appointment with your chiropractor!

Walking Fido with Your Chiropractors Blessing

Everyone knows that walking is a healthy activity and with the sudden rise in public awareness, the pedometers are firmly engaged and many will walk in the evenings, in the morning, and whenever possible. Sine many now own dogs, the latter also benefit from the realization that walking is a healthful course of action, and man and hound live happily ever after, or do they? Sadly, there are many for whom walking is not an activity they are looking forward to. Ankle pains, lower back pain, blisters, and a whole host of other complaints are oftentimes heard in a chiropractors office when someone is beginning a new walking regimen. Many a chiropractor wishes that an aspiring walker would come into the office for a consultation prior to engaging in this newfound activity, but in lieu of doing so, here are some tips that will make your next walk a fun filled and healthy activity:
* First and foremost, pick a time that works for you. Do not walk if you are going to be rushed and likely to cut corners, make bad choices with respect to crossing streets at dangerous intersections, and have to suddenly burst into sprints so as to make it to work on time.
* Dress for the occasion. Wear loose fitting clothes that are comfortable. Do not fall into the trap of trying to look stylish at the expense of being able to move freely.
* Wear shoes that both your chiropractor and your orthopedic surgeon would approve of. In todays world, shoes run the gambit of being overstated, overexposed, and overly expensive. You do not have to spend a mint in order to purchase a model of shoe simply because it showcases the famous swoosh or a famous athletes name or logo. Instead, focus on functionality. There are actually different kinds of shoes that fulfill different kinds of functions some are for running while others are for walking. Purchase the kind of shoes that fits your need, feet, and budget. Go to a reputable sports store where you will have attendants who can assist you with the purchase and help you to understand what you should look for in a sport shoe. Wear both shoes when you try them on with realistic socks such as you would wear during walking. This will show you rather quickly if the shoe will function properly.
* Invest in a pedometer. This will help you to ascertain if you are walking the requisite 10,000 steps to be considered active or if you are falling short of this goal.

As you can see, there is a lot more to walking than meets the eye. While every physician suggests walking as a healthy exercise, it is your chiropractor who will seek to counsel you in the proper methodology of walking so as to avoid spinal injuries brought on by wearing an incorrect kind of shoe which will result in an uneven distribution of weight which, in turn, would result in spinal abnormalities that could gradually develop.

Carrying Your Belongings the Chiropractic Way

It is hard to imagine that some so seemingly simple tasks as carrying your makeup and drivers license can have adverse effects on your back and neck. Chiropractors have warned for years that men and women need to not only rethink the way they dress but just as importantly the way that they carry around their belongings. Perhaps not surprisingly, many a chiropractor seeks to counsel parents to help their children carry heavy school backpacks appropriately and in such a manner that the little ones will not suffer from short term back pain and even neck pain but in the long term will not find themselves with severely deformed spines which will not adjust themselves naturally any longer. Yet it is not only children who need to be made aware of the proper methods of carrying their books and other belongings, but adults need to learn and in some cases re-learn these tasks again themselves.

Men and women are guilty of carrying their belongings in such a manner as to negatively impact their bodies, yet it is women who are well known for carrying purses and backpacks that are so heavy as to rival any high school kids carrying case. Chiropractors strongly urge women and man to carry bags that amount to less than 10 percent of their individual body weight. The less weight the better, and to this end chiropractors suggest that people check their bags, handbags, and assorted other carrying devices and leave at home anything and everything that they do not deem absolutely essential for a daily outing. In addition to the foregoing, carrying your purse or back over one shoulder further harms your back!

Ideally, you should carry your belongings in a backpack on your back. The pack should have wide straps preferably padded and not hang more than four inches below your waist. While this flies in the face of any and every fashion edict, it does go a long way to alleviate shoulder pain, reduce back pain, and prevent many an injured back. As a matter of fact, chiropractors point out that from a musculoskeletal perspective, the curvature of the spine changes when a person carries a pack or purse slung over a shoulder. The shoulder goes up and with this motion and the spine also moves up as well as forward, thus affecting the natural gait of the individual.

As you can see, there is so much more to carrying your daily necessities than meets the eye. If you are currently experiencing back pain or neck or shoulder pain, please be certain to make an appointment with your chiropractor and have her or him take a look at your back and perhaps also adjust any vertebrae that may have gone out of alignment. At the same time, do show your chiropractor the purse or pack you are carrying on a daily basis and ask the professional to evaluate it for the sake of not only functionality but also healthfulness for your back. The odds are good that your chiropractor will be able to give you some tips and advise about how to carry around your possessions in a safe and healthy manner.

Treating Neuromuscular Scoliosis with Chiropractics

Scoliosis is the kind of ailment affecting the spine that can be seen with the naked eye. Referring to an aberrant curvature of the connected vertebrae, this condition may present either because there is another condition which is already affecting the muscles or because it is a birth defect. Sadly, scoliosis is not the kind of condition that can be treated solely with chiropractic care, but instead it is a study in true interdisciplinary cooperation.

Generally speaking, the first indication that scoliosis is apparent obviously comes with a curved spine. The curve might go either to the left or the right, but it is painfully obvious. Interestingly, this condition is not always a birth disorder but may be dormant until a later time, such as adolescence, at which point a sudden appearance of a hump may indicate the problems the spine is experiencing. Adding to this diagnosis is the fact that suddenly hips and shoulders are no longer even but may be lacking symmetry.

At this time a physician is usually sought out for help. While some patients will first go to a chiropractor, the latter will generally emphasize the need for another medical professional to also make a diagnosis since oftentimes surgery is necessitated by the presentation of the scoliosis. When the consultation with the chiropractor occurs after a diagnosis is made by a medical doctor, the reason is usually two-fold: the goal is either to avoid surgery or to support the surgeries that have already occurred and the medications that have been prescribed. While the former generally speaking is an unlikely though not impossible scenario, the latter is a wise decision on the part of the patient.

The chiropractor will appreciate having access to your x-rays simply to confirm the exact location of the problem. Additionally, any surgical procedures performed should be amply documented, preferably with a prognosis for results and a summary of results actually obtained, and also an exact summary of the medications prescribed, the frequency of injections, and the outlook for progression. Sadly, in younger patients progression is much more likely than in adult onset cases, yet each case revolves on its own facts and there is no guarantee of stemming the effects of scoliosis.

Quite often chiropractors report that they have great success when treating neuromuscular scoliosis, and in addition to mild manipulation the stress is put on weight bearing exercises which also focus on maintaining and perhaps even increasing the ability of the spine to move. The goal is to avoid an occurrence of a slip which may actually lead to a decrease of the range of motion instead of an increase. While it is rare that this happens, it is a very real danger if the exercise regimen is not strictly followed and the patients spine is permitted to remain idle and without proper strength training. There are actually times when a chiropractor will suggest the use of light muscle stimulation with the help of a low electric charge, yet this is rarely recommended without the chiropractor and physician first communicating about the long term outlook and short term goal setting.

Chiropractors as Primary Care Physicians

Not too long ago chiropractic care was scoffed at by internists and other physicians. Yet as time went on and chiropractics established itself more and more as part and parcel of acceptable healthcare, it soon became obvious that chiropractors attained real results in their care of patients, and soon the word spread and many patients flocked to the waiting rooms of chiropractors all across the country. Physicians noticed that some patients were relieved of long time ailments and suddenly no longer needed weekly shots or monthly prescriptions but instead took up new hobbies or returned to their ways of life they felt were impossible to ever get back to just a few short months before. Before long, chiropractics came under close governmental scrutiny and with the institution of proper licensing and educational requirements, nothing stood in the way of open access to chiropractic anymore or so many thought.

Insurance agencies were a lot slower to permit chiropractic care to fall under the umbrella of covered medical expenses and as such they managed to severely limit patient access to chiropractors. Yet after a while this hurdle, too, was overcome and today insurance companies recognize chiropractors as primary care physicians. While this is a very positive step for patients, it has been a bit of a challenge to chiropractors of the old school who still view themselves as alternative healers and have little use for other medical disciplines. While this may have caused problems for a few, the majority of chiropractors embraced their new found status and have found great ways of sharing their findings with others while at the same time incorporating their findings, tests, assessments and medical histories collected into their files and into the overall care of their patients.

Chiropractors as primary care physicians now assess health risks of patients who may present a multitude of ailments, some of which are dependant on proper medical care involving medications. As such, they are not only responsible for assessing the possible problems that a patients health history may present, but also for compiling a comprehensive record of health information, acting as a clearing house for such health related facts, and for consulting with other healthcare providers on an as needed basis to ensure that facts are made available to anyone who is involved in the patients overall care. In addition to this sometimes hard to fathom balancing act lies the idea that as a chiropractor and thus a member of the medical arts, it falls to the chiropractor to engage in lifestyle counseling of the patient, and as such there are sometimes differences between the ideas of the chiropractor with her or his roots in the alternative healing community and the more conventional physicians whose philosophy may quite possibly be better living through chemistry. Involving the patient in the care will make it possible for the chiropractor to become that primary care physician, ensure that the patient receives the care she or he has contracted for, and also the alternative healing angle that is so desirable.

Chiropractic News You Can Use The Danger of Soccer

With the memory of the last World Cup still fresh in many a players memory, it is not surprising that soccer leagues are now claiming increased interests in membership. From the little kids levels to the adult leagues, soccer has experienced a bit of a revival in the United States, and thus it is not surprising that with so many more people playing the sport, more sports related injuries are being treated as well. Since many chiropractors are now primary care physicians and thus the first point of contact for patients suffering from a sports injury, they have noticed that an increase in sports injuries can be directly linked to certain aspects of the soccer game, and as such chiropractors are sounding the alarm!

Probably the most commonly presented problems are neck pains, headaches, and dizziness, which oftentimes can be traced back directly to neck injuries, head trauma and also damage to the spine itself. Heading a ball is one of the most commonly attempted moves in soccer and when watching the professionals do it, the move is not only elegant and effective but also looks overwhelmingly easy. Yet in reality the idea of changing the course of a speeding ball by employing the head to do so is not a good idea. In extreme cases, heading the ball has been connected to severe brain injuries, yet even in the milder cases of injuries presented there is a good chance at receiving a neck injury that can have far reaching consequences if left untreated.

In an effort to head off negative publicity, many leagues now require helmets to be worn, yet these have precious little impact on the injuries that are suffered by the blunt force of the ball itself they do, of course, protect the head from many cracking injuries and as such are better than nothing. Chiropractors now warn players of all ages to forego heading whenever possible, but if players do want to undertake this practice, it needs to be done with a lot of instruction as to form and the dos and donts. Chiropractors are especially dedicated to getting the word out to parents who might not have thought about the impact that this kind of sport is having on their children. The major concern in this area rests with the long term problems that are being created in childhood, which may not be as apparent to the child who will seek to compensate for them rather than risk a visit to the pediatrician who might be administering shots.

As such, some chiropractors have decided to do community service in its purest form by visiting leagues and sports clubs and by speaking on the subject in schools. By warning players and making them aware of the problems, they are hoping to curb an unhealthy practice, but the other goal is to help players realize when their heading has netted them an injury that needs medical attention. Oftentimes the quick painkiller is preferred when a long term misalignment of the spine is experienced.
